About Mitchel Musso
With Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana" dominating television and the
big screen over the last three years, co-star Mitchel Musso made a
promise to himself: No matter how popular he became, he would not be
one of those teen stars who records a hurry-up CD just because he
could. If the time came to make an album, he would remain true to
his highest musical instincts. Promise made; promise kept. With his
adventurous self-titled debut album for Walt Disney Records, Mitchel
proves himself every bit the showman behind the microphone that he
is in front of the camera.
Though best known as the endearing Oliver Oken on "Hannah Montana,"
Mitchel has been playing music since he could ride a trike. Adept on
piano, guitar and drums, Mitchel is also an accomplished
singer/songwriter. He performed multiple times on "Hannah Montana,"
and he also previously scored three Top 10 hits on Radio Disney,
including the searing, "The In Crowd." But with his debut solo
album, Mitchel takes center stage as a full-blown musical artist.
"I put all my heart in it," Mitchel says, "and it did turn out like
I hoped, but we took a few different roads." To help him travel
those roads, Mitchel worked with esteemed producers/songwriters such
as S*A*M & Sluggo (named Rolling Stone Hot List Producers of the
Year for their work with Metro Station, Gym Class Heroes and
others), Max Martin (Katy Perry, Carolina Liar), Curt Schneider
(Five for Fighting), and Matthew Wilder (No Doubt). Mitchel himself
co-produced two tracks "How To Lose A Girl" and "Shout It" with his
production company M3 Music, both written by PJ Bianco.
The album features two songs co-written by Mitchel: "How to Lose a
Girl" and "Shout It" (Mitchel's brother, Mason Musso of Metro
Station, sings on the latter, which is a nod to Metro Station's
double-platinum hit, "Shake It"). Overall, the album is a collection
of heart-on-the-sleeve pop/rock gems that will surely resonate for
Mitchel's teen peers.
Along with universal topics like finding, keeping and losing
girlfriends, Mitchel also sings about growing up, learning life
lessons, fitting in and dealing with fame. As for fun, the debut
single, "Hey," written by Tim Pagnotta (Sugar Cult), sets the pace.
The upbeat song puts Mitchel in full swagger mode as he leaves a
faded relationship in the dust. Says Mitchel, "What I want in my
songs is: it's all good; let's party." That's definitely the vibe in
the muscular rocker "Movin' In," which recounts warm L.A. nights out
on the prowl.
On "How to Lose a Girl," Mitchel turns a step-by-step path to teen
angst into classic pop, while "Speed Dial" offers a wistful 2.0
version of a break-up. "That really happened," he says of the song.
"I had this girl who was #1 on my speed dial. That's where the idea
came from." Mitchel moves in a more introspective direction with
songs like the impassioned ballad "You Didn't Have To Walk Away,"
"Odd Man Out" and "The In Crowd." "The song has a great message we
need to be pushing," he adds.
One of the album's surprises is the hypnotic, electronica-flavored
"Us Against The World." In "Welcome to Hollywood," Mitchel sings
about what he knows best, the cauldron of fame and how easily it can
suck you in. "It's all about the do's and don'ts of Hollywood," he
says. "I appreciate and love California, but I come from a
completely different area, in Texas. I still go back. It's my home."
The album ends with "Do It Up," a snarling break-up song that rocks
hard.
Fresh, authentic and played with abandon, the music of Mitchel Musso
reflects the artist's life and personality to perfection. Born July
9, 1991, in Garland, Texas, he is one of three talented brothers --
Marc Musso is also an actor, while Mason Musso has enjoyed success
with his band, Metro Station. In addition to music lessons, Mitchel
started landing small parts in commercials and films while still
elementary school age.
In 2003, he scored a break when he and brother Marc were cast
in "Secondhand Lions," alongside Oscar-nominee Haley Joel Osment
(brother of Emily Osment, Mitchel's eventual "Hannah Montana"
co-star). In 2005 he co-starred in the Disney Channel Original
Movie, "Life is Ruff," but landing the part of Oliver in "Hannah
Montana" the next year changed his life forever. Over three seasons,
the show has become a global phenomenon, catapulting its cast to the
pinnacle of teen stardom.
"I'm definitely appreciative of the show," Mitchel says. "I still
don't think we realize just how big it is. We're all real normal.
It's like a family."
Mitchel also provided the voices in several animated projects,
playing Jeremy in the Disney XD hit series "Phineas and Ferb," and
DJ in the Academy Award-nominated film, "Monster House."
And while acting will always be of prime importance to Mitchel,
making music plays a special role in his creative life, culminating
in his Walt Disney Records solo debut. "This album is Mitchel Musso,"
he says. "Not Oliver or Jeremy or any role I've played. It's me."
For millions of Mitchel Musso fans who always knew he had it in him,
it's about time.
